Fighting Anxiety

How does one go about fighting anxiety?

The first thing you must realise is that anxiety is an emotion just like any other. You’re not fighting the emotion, to do so would be foolish and impossible. What you are really fighting is the factors that cause you to get overwhelmed by the anxiety.

You see anxiety is actually incredibly healthy and useful. In our past anxiety was used to help us get away from danger, but circumstances for humanity have changed drastically in a short space of time and our brains haven’t been able to keep up with everything.

So the first step in fighting anxiety is to work out what is causing the overwhelm. Is it people/places/things? Is it situations or events?

Once you have worked out what is causing it you need to look at where the first point is that’s causing the problem, the point where the bad feelings are just beginning to form. Is it months before when you think about it? Is it when other people start getting excited about it? Is it right in the moment when you are confronted? (Normally this last one is the most popular answer however it’s rarely true, usually when you are right in the moment is the point when you face having a panic attack).

OK so you’ve worked out what’s the first trigger, now is there anything you can do to get past or avoid that trigger completely? Is there anyway you can practice this part of the situation so that in the future you will be far more confident in dealing with it.

Personally I find that if you look at the beliefs you have about yourself in that moment and find a way to change those, that is the most successful method. You see personal beliefs are the human mind’s way of filtering the world around it, if you change the filter you change the fundamental building blocks that make your problem a problem.

Have a play with this and let me know how you get on.
