Personal Change, Are You a Hero or a Villain?

A while ago I wrote a post on being scared of change and I think that post covers a lot of the reasons people choose not to change their lives. Today I want to tackle the same issue but from a slightly different angle, that of heros and villains.

Are you a hero or a villain? How do you know?

If you look at any culture you will be able to find references in cultural tales to heros and villains, this is a concept that is deeply rooted and serves many purposes.

The Hero

Typically a hero whether male or female will be in the stage of their life where they are coming of age, where the boy becomes a man and the girl becomes a woman. Heros always have a battle to fight, often they will try to fight that battle before they are ready, and they always fail. So the hero to be goes off, does some soul searching/learning/changes some part of themselves then they return a much better more capable person. Next time they fight they have the upper hand and always beat the villain.

The Villain

The villain is always represented by someone who is stuck, they have a view of the world that doesn’t fit with those around them, or they have a serious personal flaw that they don’t want to change, or they want something big that they simply aren’t willing to work for and try to step on other people to get it.

Villains aren’t always seperate characters, sometimes villains are a part of the hero, in a sense an inner demon. In this case the hero has to battle against themselves to win the day.

All of us are going to be part hero part villain, you can’t be all one or all of the other. What we can choose though is which side we are on, are we mostly hero or mostly villain. When doing research on personal change I unfortunately come across more villains than heros. These are people who have some kind of personal issue going on, whether that be social anxiety, alcoholism, anger issues etc. and they want to whine all day about how bad their lives are, but when it comes down to it they simply aren’t willing to put in the small amount of time it really takes to learn what they need to, collect any tools they need, and get rid of their problem once and for all.

Are you surrounded by heros or villains?

One of the biggest obsticles people have when they want to become the hero is that they are surrounded by villains, other people who will go to great lengths to keep them where they are. These people don’t necessarily do this conciously, in fact most of the time it is habit, but the reason it happens is because they are using you to try and validate themselves. When you go through any kind of personal change you need to take stock of what you have in your life. Who are the people that are there? What are they like? Do they make you stronger or weaker?

If you really want to make yourself successful. If you really want to get out of the mental trap you have been in. If you want to become happier than you’ve been before you need to take a good look at what’s going on inside you. What are the beliefs/emotions that hold you back? What tools do you need to gather and what do you need to learn to get over these problems. Once you have these sorted, go out and fight your battles, win the day and become more successful than you’ve ever been.

And of course never worry about age. Age is a mental issue. Look around you will see a great many “adults” who have a high figure for the amount of years that they’ve been alive and yet they still run around acting, thinking, and feeling like kids, they have yet to fight their battles and come of age.
