New Experience is at Least 50% of any Social Anxiety Treatment

When undertaking any social anxiety treatment you need to consider more than just what is going to happen in the therapy room. A succesful therapy will not only be able to help you get over the issues you are currently going through but also be able to direct you to going on and leading a much happier lifestyle in the future.
In my own experience many versions of social anxiety treatments don’t work becuase they assume that once you have gotten over the problem you can go out and the past is the past. But in truth if you don’t have a good plan as to what comes next you’ll end up like a participant of a Tony Robbins seminar. In the seminar you know you can kick the world’s ass, upon leaving and getting to the front door of the venue you think you can still kick the world’s ass, but you could definitely kick the ass of the country you are in. From outside the venue you see a group of people down the street and you know you could kick their ass. You jump in your car and arrive home and suddenly everything is right back as it was before you attended although you’re now several hundred (thousand) dollars poorer.
When overcoming my social anxiety I had to do 2 things.
1. Apply a method of therapy that actually worked on the root cause of the problem I was facing. When dealing with social anxiety the cause is the root beliefs that you hold about yourself like “I’m weak” or “I’m fragile” which cause you to filter reality in a very skewed way, the end result is that you are scared of everyone. Practically all therapies do not work at this level and instead try to tackle the symptoms of the issues you are facing.
2. Go out and experience living life in a new way. Even the most succesful therapies will fail if you do not do this point. You may have overcome your social phobia but all your experience of life is still tainted by failure. By going out and experiencing a new way of living and looking at the world you are creating a whole new set of contructive beliefs that will give you the experience, tools, and skills to build the life you want.
I think that’s what the new experience really comes down to: skills, tools, and good experience. Any situation you come across is going to require each of these 3 concepts in varying degrees. By not going out into the world to live the new you, you may have gotten rid of the problem but you are still living by using poorly developed skills, broken tools and bad experience. You may not get your problem back but you will not be living anywhere near your potential.

Step two… well that comes down to what you want to be and how you want to live a succesful life. Build your plan and make it happen!
